Chanel Mobile Museum

“Architect Zaha Hadid’s pavilion mobile art was commissioned by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld as a touring museum, traveling across cities – Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, Moscow, London & Paris – worldwide and curated by Fabrice Bousteau. The Chanel mobile art’ll house pieces by 20 contemporary artists from Europe, the United States, Asia, Russia and Latin America.

The pavilion is a perfect marriage between of the iconic smooth flow of lines marking Zaha Hadid’s style and Chanel’s typical elegance. Thanks to the new digital modelling tools the unit becomes a living sculpture far away from the typical idea of “building”. Its form looks like is always turning into something different.

Every step you make around the pavilion, it changes its form naturally and sensually, in stark but pleasant contrast with the rigid order and repetition of the nearby Jean Nouvel’s IMA building. Born to travel around the world, all the structure (flooring included) had been designed to be easily built in less than one week, an essential requirement for a mobile museum.

An area of 1.600 m2 was covered with Artigo UNI in a special dark grey RAL reference (7016) harmoniously blending into the interior design and the architectural features that strongly characterize the spaces of the building. The elegant and minimal look of Artigo UNI perfectly lands itself to this kind of application since it does not divert the attention of people while visiting the exhibition. Artigo production technique can match almost any RAL, Pantone, NCS or custom colour, giving total freedom and a strong medium to the designers to better realize their ideas.

Artigo flooring had been chosen several times for exhibition project (just to mention several exhibitions at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Erarta Modern Art museum of St. Petersburg) .
The reason of this choice is quite clear not only under a visual point of view but also thanks to the technical performances it features : the natural slip resistance of rubber, the abrasion resistance and the highest reduction of treading sound tested among the resilient fooring of the same thickness. Zaha Hadid’s Chanel Mobile Art Pavillion is a perfect example of how Artigo flooring can fit into the most exclusive projects of the greatest architects of our time.”
